School Profile

University of The Immaculate Conception, also referred to by its acronym UIC is a private Catholic basic and higher education institution administered by the Religious of the Virgin Mary in Davao City, Davao del Sur, Philippines. The university began in 1905 as Escuela Catolica de San Pedro.



    In my first week of observing, I learned that UIC has 3 different campus locations, Fr. Selga Campus (Main), Bonifacio Campus (Annex) and Bajada Campus (Basic Education). During I was following this program and teaching in Basic Education at Bajada Campus, I lived in the dormitory of Fr. Selga Campus (Main). In the Dormitory I live together with international students and UIC Students. This dorm is only for female students so the dorm will close at 9 pm. The facilities during our stay here were well prepared, such as providing a separate kitchen because we respect those of us who are Muslim. This made us feel comfortable while staying in the UIC dormitory. 

    To get to the Bajada Campus, I need to spend around 40 minutes from the Main Campus using a Jeepney and then using a Tricycle to get to the front of the school gate. Basic Education at Bajada Campus has 3 levels of education. Elementary School, Junior High School, and and the level I teached is Senior High School.


 
    In 2000 UIC Bajada was first established on 7 hectares of land located in Dumanlas, Bajada, 8000 Davao City. This campus offers basic education starting from pre-school, elementary school, middle school and high school. UIC have Vision.

GOAL

The University of the Immaculate Conception is a Catholic school that is a part of the Congregation of the Religious of the Blessed Virgin Mary that aims to impart Catholic values to its students and personnel. Its purpose is to provide an educational program and environment imbued with Catholic doctrines, beliefs, teachings, traditions, and practices, the implementation of which is protected by, among the others, Article III, Section 5 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution.

For us to approximate our vision and fulfill our mission, we dedicate all our human resources to transform the members of the UIC family into enlightened, empowered, proactive, and liberated Christian leaders who live in a humane and harmonious community for the love of God, country, and the world.

Academic Support System

There are three buildings on the Bajada Campus for Elementary to high school. During this program, I taught at the high school level with the subject of entrepreneurship which is in accordance with my major, economics education.  I taught 8 different classes at level 11 (St. Irenaeus, St. Felicity, St. Lucy, St. Blaise, St. Agatha, St. Clement, St. Joseph and St. Scholastica).

Facilities available in each classroom are LCD TVs, fans, a rather long blackboard that can make it easier for students to learn the material provided by the instructor. UIC also provides several useful rooms such as a library with extensive facilities (air conditioning, computers to search for books, lecturer rooms, and comfortable tables and chairs) to support student learning. Prayer room and clinic.

Teaching System

        The teaching and learning process here is carried out in a full day school, which is only 5 days. The learning process for each class starts from 07.30 in the morning and ends at 04.45 in the afternoon. The subjects taught at this school are STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics), HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences), ABM (Accountancy Business and Management), GAS (General Academic and Strand), ICT (Information and Communications Technology), Home Economics and Performing Arts. 

Materials and Other Learning Sources

        The materials taught are in line with the K-12 core curriculum. During lessons, teachers have books that can be requested from the school library. In addition, students also have books as study guidance. Besides using books, teachers can also complement and search for materials on the internet (online books).

Measurement and Evaluation System

        As an evaluation of the learning process, the school gives exams. There are monthly exams held every month and termly exams held at the end of each quarter. At the end of the year, there will be awards for students who manage to improve their grades. It's not just exams though. Evaluation is also done through quizzes at the end of the learning process.

Curriculum

    UIC High School teachers have also prepared for the intensive implementation of the UbD Framework and the initial implementation of the K to 12 program by attending the "Curricular Visioning and Benchmarking" training which emphasizes teachers as curriculum leaders. The training, which takes the form of lecture-workshops, improves teaching effectiveness. This training initiative is an innovative approach to equipping faculty to make curriculum changes and expand learning opportunities. Teachers were productively engaged in the workshop activities, which led to the review of the Teaching Development Program.

Teachers created their own lesson plans that were in line with the curriculum and based on the content and sequence of monitoring that would take place after entering the new quarter.

 Teacher's Planning           Teachers prepare the teaching plans in accordance with the curriculum. Teachers must design teaching plans so that the expected learning objectives can be reached. The teaching plan is only for one Topic. So teachers should prepare a teaching plan for each meeting. Preparing Lessons and Materials           As a teacher, we are required to prepare everything that is needed when learning takes place, such as lesson plans and materials. Teachers must develop lesson plans properly in accordance with existing guidelines, the lesson plans designed must have clear and directed goals. 2. PEDAGOGICAL CONTENTS

 Teaching Method           Based on my observations, during the learning process my Cooperative Teacher (Ms. Fritz Ongcoy) teach Entrepreneurship subject used the Student Center Learning method. This method prioritizes student participation in class, such as question and answer and group work as well as field practice. During the learning process, the teacher will always appreciate the students by giving words of compliments and support such as "very nice" or "Great".  Learning Materials and Innovation           During class, my cooperative teacher teaches using materials from books and also online teaching materials. The teacher will use Canva slides (PPT) in presenting the material and Google Classroom to attract students' attention and make it easier for students to learn the material and can also take examples for students.
